Samsung begins rollout of blood pressure monitoring app for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 in South Korea

Samsung has yet to enable the long-anticipated ECG support on the Galaxy Watch Active 2, but the company continues to work towards making the Galaxy Watch Active 2 more useful. Earlier this year, Samsung had announced a blood pressure monitoring app for the smartwatch which would allow users to regularly measure and track their blood pressure without the need of a cuff (for the most part). The whole functionality had been approved for use in South Korea, and now, Samsung has begun rolling out the feature to the Galaxy Watch Active 2 users in the region.

Samsung had promised that the functionality would make its way to the smartwatch in the third quarter of this year, but it has arrived earlier than scheduled, much to the delight of users in that region. South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety had given its clearance for the Samsung Health Monitor application at the time of the first announcement, so the rollout for the feature was imminent.

To monitor blood pressure on the Galaxy Watch Active 2, users will need to first calibrate the smartwatch and the app with a traditional cuff. They will then be able to tap to “Measure” the blood pressure anytime, anywhere through pulse wave analysis via the wrist sensors on the wearable. The Samsung Health Monitor app will then analyze the relationship between the calibration value and the blood pressure change to determine the blood pressure. Results can be synced to the app on your phone, letting you track readings and fluctuations over a longer period of time.

Samsung has assured that ECG tracking will also be supported on the Samsung Health Monitor app in South Korea within the third quarter of this year, and the feature had been cleared for the region recently. There is no new information on when blood pressure monitoring and ECG tracking would be made available to regions outside of South Korea, so we can presume the timeline of Q3 2020 to remain in place. Samsung also plans to gradually expand the feature to other watches in its existing lineup subject to hardware constraints. It’s upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch is also expected to come with these functions in place.
